Preparation for K-9 Bed Bug Inspection Your cooperation is critical to ensuring a successful inspection. Therefore, we ask that you complete the following essential preparation steps:

• Remove all bed linens and furniture covers.
• Move all furniture (beds, chairs, sofas, etc.) 2 feet away from any wall, if possible. This will allow the canine to conduct a thorough inspection around these items.
• Move objects such as shoe boxes, toys, storage containers, etc. to allow the canine access to all beds and furniture.
• Remove pets from the living area or place them in the bathroom,with the door closed on the day of the scheduled inspection.
• Place all food in containers, cabinets or the refrigerator.
• Empty all trash receptacles.
• Turn off all fans and air conditioners.
• Unlock and open all lockers, if they are to be inspected.

Inspections will be conducted in areas where people are normally sedentary (still or at rest for extended periods), such as bedrooms and the livingroom. Inspections will not be performed if any of the above preparations are not completed at the time of inspection.

How Does a K-9 Unit Bed Bug Inspection Work?

K-9 bed bug detection dogs use their keen sense of smell to detect the odor of live bed bugs and viable bed bug eggs.  “Bug Busters” K-9 bed bug dogs are trained on a food/or toy reward philosophy, similar to Disaster Search and Human Remains Detection dogs.  This means that if the K-9 “alerts” (a special action specific to each individual dog’s training) its handler will reward with food. Once the area search is completed the dog is rewarded with play.  The area or areas where the K-9 “alerts” will be recorded for further inspection by the handler and allow for quicker, more targeted bed bug treatment.
